“NY Votes for Women: A Suffrage Centennial Anthology,” a live reading from various contributors

June 6, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$10

What was it like for courageous women in New York State to fight for the vote?  What parts of our heritage – history and herstory – have we never heard before?  And, one hundred years later, what other issues of equality are renewing the pull that many feel to speak out?

In NY Votes for Women: A Suffrage Centennial Anthology, twenty-two women explore these questions in a variety of engaging essays, stories and poems.

Though the Centennial is historic, the project and the event is also a response to modern times. In the fall of 2016, Stacey Murphy and other local writers came to feel an urgency in the project in response to the unease they and other women were feeling with the events leading up to the November 2016 election, the election itself, and disturbing implications for women as our American history continues to unfold.

“A big part of the project is about making a forum for voices,” explained Murphy. While the project contains contributions from previously published, known writers, it also contains contributions from women who had not been moved to reflect on the significance of the women’s movement, or the stories of the strong women ancestors, in their own lives.

Join Anthology editors and readers on June 6 at 4 PM and hear readings from several contributors at the Crispell Memorial French Church on Huguenot Street.
